For the moment, Eclipse owns the Java/J2ee open source market. It has momentum in name brand, plugins and corporate support.
Eclipse is the Microsoft of its market space.
Like Microsft, market share is Eclipse's strength, but it is also a weakness. Microsoft must maintain backward compatibility and a level of mediocrity to be most things to most people.
